Writing a musical is hard enough without getting in our own way. But there are tons of ways that we can accidentally block ourselves from achieving that next step in our writing journeys - whether that’s finishing a first draft, putting on a reading, submitting for production, or even just getting started. Last year in 2025 I made a concerted effort to stop doing 10 things that I knew were going to prevent me from reaching my big goals, which were: Completing two full musical drafts of two very different shows, and putting on an industry reading of one of them in the Fall. And I did it. But if I had not stopped doing these 10 things, I can guarantee you that I absolutely would not have made it. And maybe some of these things are blocking you too?
